Darwin, Australia

It took a while to get here.  We sailed from behind the Great Coral Reefs at the very northern tip of Australia at Thursday Island.  We are now in the Arafula Sea which is part of the Indian Ocean. And it is hot. One passenger remarked she wasn't sure she prefered warm seas to the icy ones that would quickly kill you. She was worried that if she fell in she'd be conscious and then eaten by sharks while waiting for the ship. It takes three miles to stop and then launch a tinder. I guess some people have to find something to go on about, even is they are being treated so luxuriously.

I went with Cathy on shore while her husbane golfed and we met Mary Ann at the shuttle and shared a cab to go to the Aborigines Museum. Very nice but, I was more happy that it was air conditioned. It was like when I lived in New Orleans. I found it ironic that after leaving the musuem and doing a a shopping in the tourist area I ran into Aborigines every block begging for money.

We had lunch at the Wisdom Bar and Grill.  I love that name. Beer comes with the lunch special. Something inside I hadn't seen in decades - a cigarette machine.  Not the old style but a modern digital machine.  There are a lot of smokers here.

In the 1970s a 17 foot crocodile named “Sweetheart” ruled Sweet's Billabong
in the Finniss River, 55 km south-west of Darwin. There were boat propelers
and some said human bones found in her belly.

1974 Cycone Tracy winds were so strong it bent over this iron railroad signal tower.

The cyclone devestated Darwin.  It took the whole the whole city out.

Our pilot boat heads out just befoer we depart Darwin

Good bye Darwin
