This is my home for the next six months: The Insignia at Pier 81 on the Hudson River, just about where Sully set a passenger jet down. Insignia is almost 600 feet and does 18 knots. I thought everyone was doing the World Cruise but it looks like 2/3 are going all the way around. Many are just going to LA. It is a lot smaller than the Norwegian liner the kids and I took around the Caribbian, It held over 3000 passengers. This ship carries about 840 passengers.
Because of poor seas the ship was late getting in to NYC. We were supposed to leave the middle of the day but we ending up departing in the early evening. But it was lucky thing because left NYC as it got dark and the lights of the city were fantastic. There were photographers all along the rails getting shots. We went to the starboard side to catch the lit up Statue of Liberty on the way out. It was all so beautiful. I talked to Dr. Henry Tom about shooting and Photoshop. We're putting together a photo club tomorrow for the cruise.
It didn't take long to go from light to dark so our departure was perfect. Very chilly on deck and a high wind that was pushing the ship around a little bit.
Further down is the green lit golf driving range next to Pier 61. You guys that worked that detail at the Republican Convention will recognize it.
This is the view from my cabin. It is down in the passenger basement. The "cheap seats" not so cheap. It's on Deck 4 close to the water. I'm happy. If I feel like setting outside there is plenty of open deck space. It's chilly and windy now but its getting nothing but warmer from now on.
I came out of the cold and worked on unpacking. That is a real chore but, I'm about set up now.
I had a wonderful dinner in the Polo Grill which is at the stern of the ship with large windows looking out the back at a shrinking New York City while I sipped on a nice red wine that went perfectly with the perfectly cooked lamb. And to top the dinner off it was all so well presented it was almost ashamed to eat it. The utensils were as hefty as a Glock 35 and made short work of the defenseless tasty food. Damn it I just may stay on this ship forever.
